Masik Shivratri 2026 Fasting Rules: Do’s and Don’ts

The rules for Masik Shivratri fast are somewhat straightforward yet require the ability to resist some very basic necessities.

On the morning of fast, take a ritual bath early, wear clean clothes, white or off-white are the preferred colours for spiritual awakening.

Before the ritual, at your home or in front of a Shivling, take a 'sankalp', a Vow for observing fast with a pure heart.

Many keep a strict fasting where they do not intake any food or water throughout the day-this is called Nirvana fast.

Some eat a mild form of 'phalahari' fast which includes milk, yogurt, fruits, nuts, and dishes only with sendha namak. Do not eat grains, pulses, onions, garlic, eggs, non-veg foods and any 'tamasic' food. Maintain your cool, avoid arguments with people around and gossip.

You need to break fast only after sunrise, in the following morning, and after offering worship.

It is important to note that if you find it very difficult to observe a full fast, then it is still completely permissible to offer worship and fast partially. All that matters is true devotion.
